Netflix’s upcoming action film 6 Underground is the most Michael Bay movie ever according to science – and Ryan Reynolds. Bay of course has long been known as a purveyor of Hollywood-style big-budget action at its loudest and (arguably) most obnoxious. The director first established that reputation in the 1990s with a string of hits including Bad Boys, The Rock and Armageddon, then later took the reins of the Transformers franchise and delivered a series of worldwide blockbusters that grossed a combined $4.3 billion.
Now though, with the Transformers franchise no longer requiring Bay’s services, the director is returning somewhat to his roots with a more grounded action film produced by Netflix. Starring Reynolds, 6 Underground concerns a group of agents who have completely erased their own pasts in order to undertake a mission to change the world. Written Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese of Deadpool and Zombieland fame, the film also stars Mélanie Laurent, Corey Hawkins, Adria Arjona, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Lior Raz, Payman Maadi and Dave Franco.
Though 6 Underground sees Bay working with Netflix, and no longer dealing with giant alien robot transformers spreading worldwide carnage, that doesn’t mean the film is dialing back on the action. In fact, according to a new video preview released by Netflix and featuring Reynolds, 6 Underground is indeed the most Michael Bay movie ever. See the video in the space below:
According to Reynolds in the video, Bay is a “pioneer of the kind of tear-soaked, emotionally understated drama that makes us all question our role in the human experience.” The video then goes on to show Bay directing 6 Underground, which of course does not feature understated drama but instead is full of explosions. The video then shows some alleged live tests that feature audience members watching the movie’s crazy action scenes and becoming more excited, until the movie achieves “Maximum Bayhem.” Reynolds finally implores viewers, “Don’t miss the most Michael Bay movie that Michael Bay has ever Michael Bayed.”
Clearly, Netflix has decided not to shy away from Bay’s connection to the movie but is instead embracing the director’s reputation as someone who doesn’t care much about characterization or storytelling nuance but is all about the car chases, gun battles and explosions. They also have shrewdly enlisted Reynolds, a man who is very good at selling his own movies, to be a prominent part of the advertising campaign. And perhaps most importantly, they’re putting forth the movie’s action as a major selling point without spoiling plot details.
It remains to be seen whether the combination of Reynolds and Bay will win over Netflix viewers. At the very least, 6 Underground should provide a fun and diverting experience for folks who aren’t interested in a cerebral movie but instead want to enjoy an old-fashioned Bay-style romp.
